Project Description
Some parts are impressive because of what it takes to shape them. This one qualifies. Machined at CNC Rapid from aluminum in a small production batch, this curved structural bracket combines a large flowing three-dimensional surface with a precision mounting flange — first cut on our multi-axis machines, then carefully hand-finished to its clean, smooth sheen.
It’s a combination of two kinds of skill: the multi-axis machining to create the complex geometry, and the hands-on craftsmanship to refine the surface to a flawless final finish.

Why This Part Is Challenging
The geometry alone puts this part well beyond basic machining. A few of the demands it places on the shop:
- A large freeform curved surface — the sweeping, saddle-like body has to flow smoothly, achieved through fine, carefully controlled multi-axis tool paths and refined by hand to a seamless final surface.
- A precision circular flange — the round mounting face carries a central bore, a ring of bolt holes, and pocketed reliefs, all needing accurate position and a flat, true seating surface.
- The blend between features — the transition where the flange flows into the curved body has to stay clean and continuous, which is where geometry, tooling, and technique all have to come together.
- Consistent surface quality across curved and flat regions alike, so the whole part looks and functions as one cohesive piece.
Parts like this reward experience: knowing how to orient the work and choose tooling to machine the geometry well, then applying skilled hand-finishing to bring the surface to its final quality.
Why Aluminum?
Aluminum offers an excellent balance of strength, light weight, and machinability — which is exactly what a part like this needs. It machines cleanly and takes a fine, smooth finish beautifully, making it ideal for components where both structural performance and appearance matter.
Lightweight and rigid, it’s a natural choice for structural brackets, supports, and mounts where reducing mass is a priority without giving up stiffness.
Small-Batch Precision
Produced as a small production batch, each part carries the same flowing surface and accurate flange features. Small-run work like this calls for the flexibility to set up complex geometry efficiently while still holding tight, repeatable quality across every piece — the sweet spot between one-off prototyping and full-scale production, and exactly the range CNC Rapid is built for.
Ideal Applications
A curved structural bracket like this is a natural fit wherever lightweight, load-bearing, and visually clean components are needed, including:
- Robotics and automation structures
- Aerospace and defense components
- Motion and machinery supports
- Specialty equipment and instrumentation
- Any application combining structural performance with a high-quality finish
